New diagnostics for the early detection of cervical cancer
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is known to cause one of the highest infection rates (300 million males and females worldwide) of sexual transmitted diseases. It is responsible for most skin and genital warts as well as for malignant tumours like the cervical and anogenital carcinoma. The high rate of infection, the varying experience of physicians for early diagnosis, and the mainly low specificity of the existing diagnostic approaches, has given rise to the need to have a simple, fast and safe diagnostic kit. Amynon Biotech has been successful in developing an innovative diagnostic kit to significantly support the evaluation of ectocervical smears and cervical biopsies. Amynon's product PapTec is a diagnostic tool, which is based on polyclonal antibodies which detect the HPV E7 protein in immuno-histochemistry in PapSmear and tumour biopsies. In comparison to existing approaches the PapTec approach is the only one, which is stage- and HPV-specific. Stage-specific means, it does not detect transient or inactive HPV infected cells, and HPV-specificity means, it only gives a signal of an HPV-induced tumour development. PapTec results in a significant reduction of false negative and false positive results and further leads to cost efficiency by reducing the number of false positive diagnosis.
